Keeping your lawn’s grass looking green and healthy is a chore, especially in the hot Florida sun. There are many factors that go into keeping a lawn at its peak condition – the type of grass, watering schedule and amount, how often to mow, pests, reseeding or replanting and, often forgotten, fertilizers.
As a reminder, let’s go over the best time to fertilize Florida’s stubborn grass and why it’s important.
Why Should You Fertilize Your Grass?
While good soil does provide nutrients to grass, it is not always enough. Proper fertilization is plant food to help your lawn grow healthy and gives it much needed extra nutrients to protect it from Florida’s harsh environments.
A good fertilizer allows for deeper root growth and better blade growth. Plus, it helps reduce pesky weeds and aids recovery from pest damage and environmental stressors like flooding, harsh storms, etc.
When is the Best Time to Fertilize Your Lawn in Northwest Florida?
The first fertilization should take place in mid-April, with another two applications in the summer and early fall, the last one no later than mid-September. This fertilization season provides the needed nutrients during the active grass growth phase.
In the Florida panhandle, grasses tend to be dormant in the winter months. In colder weather, the grass isn’t able to take in as much nutrients, so it’s advised to avoid applying nitrogen fertilizers in colder climates.
If you are expecting heavy rain ( more than 1 to 2 inches) consider waiting to fertilize until it passes. You want to make sure the fertilizer doesn’t get washed away and has a chance to soak into the soil and root systems.
If you’ve just planted new turfgrass, it’s recommended to wait 60 to 90 days before using nitrogen fertilizer. Younger roots aren’t deep enough to absorb the nutrients, and the soil from the sod farm may already have fertilizer or extra nutrients in place.
Using too much or too little fertilizer can be just as hurtful to your lawn as not using any at all. This can be an extensive process. You should always contact a professional lawn care company to help with fertilizing your lawn.
